What is Electrical Heat Tracing (EHT)?

Electrical Heat Tracing (EHT) is a system used to maintain or raise the temperature of pipes, vessels, or equipment using electrically powered heating cables.

It’s often installed along pipelines or tanks to prevent freezing, maintain process temperature, or ensure fluid viscosity in industrial plants.

Basic Principle

Electrical Heat Tracing works by:

  • Running heating cables (resistance wires) along the surface of pipes or tanks,
  • Covering them with thermal insulation, and
  • Controlling the temperature using thermostats, sensors, or controllers.

When electricity flows through the cable, it generates heat due to electrical resistance — this heat is transferred to the pipe and keeps the process fluid inside at the desired temperature.

Types
Advantages
Application
  • Self-Regulating Cables
    • Adjust output automatically based on surface temperature.
    • Energy efficient and safe (no overheating).
  • Constant Wattage Cables
    • Deliver fixed power per unit length.
    • Used where precise control is needed with external thermostat.
  • Mineral Insulated (MI) Cables
    • High-temperature and durable cables (for critical applications like oil refineries, steam lines).
  • Series Resistance Cables
    • Long-length circuits for large pipelines.
  • Prevents freezing and solidification of fluids.
  • Maintains consistent process temperature.
  • Easy to install and automate with thermostats or PLC control.
  • Energy-efficient with self-regulating cables.
  • Reduces downtime and maintenance issues.
Industry Use Case
Water Treatment / Utilities Freeze protection of water pipes and tanks.
Oil & Gas / Petrochemical Maintain viscosity of heavy oils, prevent wax formation in pipelines.
Chemical Plants Maintain reaction temperatures and prevent crystallization.
Food & Beverage Keep edible oils, syrups, or fats flowing.
Pharmaceuticals Maintain precise process temperatures.

Comparison: Electrical vs Steam Tracing

Feature Electrical Heat Tracing Steam Tracing
Heat Source Electricity Steam
Control Precise (thermostatic/PLC) Limited (manual/pressure-based)
Maintenance Low High (condensate, leaks)
Installation Easier, modular More complex
Best for Remote or small-scale systems Large plants with existing steam network
